Behind open models, a silent geopolitical battle

Focus of Letter 2

Three articles for the focus of the week, Apertus, Hunyuan Image and Qwen Next, which highlight the subjects of open-source but also that of a “geopolitics” of AI.

Open-source models (generally semi-open, Apertus being almost an exception here), increasingly at the same level as proprietary models, fuel the evolution of technologies and research while allowing new uses through their documentation and possible reuse.

The “geopolitics” of AI, while very visible, is perhaps less highlighted: with these three tools, we see here the multiple challenges in terms of sovereignty, AI economy, the presence of languages and cultures, “soft power”… The subject was addressed in a podcast on France Culture last winter: “Artificial intelligence, a geopolitical weapon“.

Feel free to share your thoughts and readings on these two topics!
